Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to question particular calls from the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
