The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
